Meet Kristin from The Fresh Find
We’ve been keeping it fresh with frequent stops at Kristin Hong’s health-conscious blog, The Fresh Find. The blog started as Kristin’s “little secret,” and we couldn’t be happier that she decided to share it with the world! At The Fresh Find, Kristin serves up a main dish of healthy recipes complemented with a side of super food spotlights, all completed with travel experiences and restaurant reviews for dessert.
We love Kristin’s passion for discovery and we were delighted when she agreed to let us pick her brain on her favorite food gadget, biggest kitchen flop, what inspires her and more.
What inspired you to become a blogger?
I used to write health newsletters for my sorority in college and loved spreading that information. When I was having a ‘post-college crisis,’ I picked up blogging to continue spreading healthy information. It was my escape from my office job and allowed me to cook and photograph!
Favorite food to eat:
Oh, the dreaded question – I can never decide! I love shrimp. And salmon. And crab. Oh goodness… I guess seafood? But then again, I also love oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, dry-roasted almonds and my mom’s sticky rice.
Plus, I love the texture of quinoa.
Sweet or savory … or both:
Sweet, almost always.
Favorite trick of the trade when it comes to cooking/baking:
The best kind of cooking happens when you cook for good friends and family. As much as I love what is on my plate (and in my wine glass), the best part is the people you share your meal with.
Favorite food substitute when cooking/baking:
I usually only substitute in baking, so I’d have to go with applesauce for half the butter!
One piece of advice you would give to beginning bloggers:
Relax. I drove myself crazy with the technical side of the website, and sometimes I still do. But, it will all come together, it just takes time and patience.
Favorite kitchen gadget:
My Single Serve Blender… I use it to make smoothies all the time!
Biggest food flop:
I once tried to make Butter Crisp cookies healthier, and make them without butter. As you can imagine, I ended up with extremely floppy cookies… those ended up in the trash.
With so many food choices, how do you choose what food is right for you?
I am very heavy on the veggie side… you can never have too many veggies. If there are grains in the meal, I will choose whole grains 99% of the time. I know they are healthier for you and lucky for me, I like the taste of them better. I also go for lean proteins and sweets in moderation!
