Why are carbonated beverages called “soft drinks?”

It’s actually because of simple advertising. Early in their history, carbonated beverage makers had a hard time marketing their product because it was called different things in different parts of the country and world. The term “soft drink” was coined as a universal term for carbonated beverages so consumers were not confused by other terms such as pop, soda, etc.
