Why did sailors eat citrus fruits?
Scurvy was a common disease among sailors in the 1700’s, until in 1747 Dr. James Lind discovered that sailors who consumed citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and limes did not suffer from the disease. It was discovered that vitamin C was the key to preventing this widespread condition.
