Word of the Week: Fig

Fig Pronunciation

Noun: A fig is a soft, pear-shaped fruit belonging to the mulberry family, with sweet dark flesh and small seeds.

The fig is native to southwestern Asia, and is now widely grown throughout the temperate world. It’s grown as both an edible fruit and as an ornamental tree. It is the only fruit to fully ripen and semi-dry on the tree.

Used in a sentence:

The fig is used to make figgy pudding, a dessert that more resembles a cake than a pudding and is immortalized in the song “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

Now when you sing that holiday favorite, you’ll know more about the fruit in figgy pudding!
